Distraught over the wedding of her true love, Paisley Whelps, to his 3rd cousin twice removed or is it his 2nd cousin thrice removed, Snarlett marries the first man she sees, Charles Hankypank, who immediately meets a tragic demise. Spurning the advances of the slightly 'off', okra plantation heir, "Cap'n" Rhetch Bumbler, Snarlett shares the Atlanta home with Paisley's wife, Meddling. The arrival of the Whelps' first child, with the help of the house servant, Pristine, coupled with the arrival of the Union Army, prompts a trip back to the O'Hernia plantation, TerraBelle. Finding her parents dead and taxes due, Snarlett marries the first man she sees, Frank Hankypank (Charles' twin brother), who immediately meets a tragic demise. Needing money to save her family home, Snarlett visits, Rhetch in jail and reluctantly agrees to marry him. Their marriage is very soon blessed with the arrival of their first "child", Bunnie Black Bumbler, who turns out to be a corn cob doll. Unable to cope with his new wife, Rhetch leaves her in the doorway, with his famous line, almost.
